Keep in mind that God established His priority from the beginning of creation and made it very clear by His own declaration of mankind. Jesus came to earth and re-established God's number one priority (Matt 6:33)
Remember that Jesus established God's priority for all mankind with several powerful and straightforward statements.
Matthew 6:25 (Life Application Study Bible New Living Translation): So I tell you, don't worry about everyday life; whether you have enough food, drink and clothes. Doesn't life consist of more than food and clothing?
The word "worry" means to consume in thought, to establish our first interest, mental preoccupation, priority, concern, fretting, fear of the unknown. To rehearse the future over which we have no control.
Matthew 6:26-27 Look at the birds, they don't need to plant or harvest or put food in barns because your Heavenly Father feeds them. And you are more valuable to Him than they are. 27. Can all your worries add a single moment to your life? Of course not.
This statement implies that our self-worth is more important than our basic needs and should never be sacrificed for the sake of those needs.
Jesus continued to say:
Matthew 6:28-30 And why worry about your clothes? Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don't work or make their clothing, 29. yet Solomon with all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30. And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers and they are here today and gone tomorrow, won't He more surely care for you? You have so little faith!
The weight of these scriptures is that our confidence should be in our creator's obligation and commitment to sustain His creation. This should lead us to transfer our priorities from the basic human needs to the priority of cultivating and maintaining a healthy relationship with God and His kingdom.
Jesus continued:
Matthew 6:31-32 So don't worry about having enough food or drink or clothing. 32. Why be like the pagans who are so deeply concerned about these things? Your Heavenly Father already knows all your needs.
The word "pagans" here implies that religion should not be motivated by the basic drives of human needs for food, water, clothing, shelter and other things of like manner.
Jesus goes on to say:
Matthew 6:33 ...and He will give you all you need from day to day if you live for Him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.
Here Jesus states God's number one priority
If everything that we have pursued, strived for and lived is found in the Kingdom, then we have been misguided and perhaps have imposed on ourselves unnecessary hardship and stress as well as frustration. All we have to do is seek His kingdom and His righteousness. That is all He requires.
Jesus continued His last words here:
Matthew 6:34 So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring it's own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today.
