There is nothing more tragic than a life without a purpose. Why is having a purpose so important? Purpose is the source of priorities. Defining your life's priorities is extremely difficult unless you first discover and define your purpose. Jesus knew His main priority and purpose for His being here on planet earth. Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; but He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” And He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. Now purpose is defined as the original reason and intent for the creation of a thing. Therefore, purpose is the source of meaning and significance for all created things. if your purpose isn't known, your priorities cannot be established and nothing that is significant or worthwhile in life can be accomplished. In essence, if you don't know why you are on planet Earth, and possess a clear sense of your purpose and destiny; then the demand for priority is low or nonexistent. The truth is, if you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there. Everyday life is constantly demanding our time, energy, talent, attention and focus.
Keep in mind, Jesus' dying on the cross was a means to an end. Not the end. His first priority was to deliver the Kingdom message to the world. That was the good news of the Gospel (the Kingdom is here) I cannot emphasize that enough. It was so important that He instructed His disciples what to preach. Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece. “Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart. And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.” So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
In order for you to effectively manage the everyday demands, you must know what priorities come first. No matter what you think about life, you have to live it everyday and give an account of your management. I truly believe that one of the greatest challenges in life is the daily demands of choosing between competing alternatives that will consume our lives. Just look around you. So many believers have been sidetracked by things and "stuff". If you don't have a clear and correct priority in your life and know what you should be doing, your life will be an exercise in futility.
The absence of priorities is very dangerous and detrimental. This is why Jesus made this statement But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. In conclusion, we spend most of our time sweating, fretting and laboring over issues that, in the eternal scheme of things, are pointless. In the meantime, those things that really matter go undone.
