Jesus made this statement, recorded by Matthew in God's Constitution: Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these sayings, that He departed from Galilee and came to the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them there. The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?”
And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?” He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.”
Jesus referred back to the beginning, meaning the original point. I want you to be aware, that these verses reveal two important truths to understand about the Lord God's kind of marriage. First, God will join together only that which He can allow. God cannot and will not sanction disobedience in any form. Can you imagine God taking two sinners (disobedient), and joining them together and blessing them? I can't. To do so would be to bless and encourage sin. Not to mention, that it goes against His nature. At the beginning of creation, when God brought them together, Adam and Eve were pure and holy, untouched by the knowledge of sin (disobedience) and uncorrupted. Prior to the fall, their marriage was the model of everything God intended. Keep in mind, the Lord God cannot and will not bless a sinful relationship. There is no compromise. No God-sanctioned union can possibly exist between unbelievers or between anyone who marries with unresolved sin in their lives or who come together under circumstances that are sinful or otherwise contrary to God's standard and principles. For example, you can't live together and then get married, without first repenting to the King for your disobedience, and expect Him to bless your union.
The second truth is that what God has joined together, no man can separate. So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate. Human civil government possesses neither the authority nor the power to disjoin a God-ordained marriage between two Kingdom Citizens (believers). In the natural, civil marriages established by civil law may be absolved by civil law. Now people who get married outside of God's law can also get unmarried outside of God's law. But in the spiritual, marriage that God has sanctioned cannot be broken by the decree of man. This raises a very important question. If believers came to the marriage altar for God to join them together, then why do so many of them go through the court system to get unjoined? Because of the hardness of their heart. He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
Once you come into the knowledge of the truth, repent for your disobedience. From there go and sin no more. Remember what Jesus said to the man at the pool: Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, “See, you have been made well. Sin no more, lest a worse thing come upon you.”
The Lord God will forgive your past, regardless how bad you may think it is.
