Why We Speak in Tongues

Can you be a Kingdom citizen without speaking a Kingdom language? Yes, I believe you can. But you will lack the power you could have in Kingdom life that comes from intimate communications through the Holy Spirit to the Father. It is through the Holy Spirit within us that we speak in a heavenly language. That is one of many reasons the Lord Jesus came to this earth of His Father’s Will. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:4
When you speak in tongues here on earth, it is as if you picked up your cell phone to call your home. Keep in mind that you are speaking in your original language. Or we could say in your native tongue! Here is what the Lord God’s Constitution states: For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. 1 Corinthians 14:2 Yes, the individual who is speaking in tongues is uttering mysteries with their spirit. They are praying what God wants. We are to pray in tongues more than we pray in our human language. Remember we are reborn and have a new culture and we are renewed by His Spirit. We are changed.
When we are praying “on our own”, we say what is on our mind or in our nature. Sometimes we just don’t know what to pray about a situation we are faced with. We say what we want, but when we pray by the Holy Spirit, we pray the Will of God in our life. Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 This is why, when we pray in the Spirit, we know that the King hears us and that we have the things we asked Him for, because our Kingdom Governor—the Holy Spirit—helps us to pray according to the Will of our Kingdom government.
Years ago, while attending a church in Brooklyn, where I lived, there were many people who refered to tongues as “babbling”. In fact, the reverse is true. We may not understand what is being said, but the Father does! And the Holy Spirit does. Tongues communicate the thoughts and requests of the heart more clearly than praying in our earthly language. Every time that I speak in His Heavenly language, I am speaking to my King from my spirit. The more I do it, the more I enjoy it. That intimate communication gives me clarity and direction of purpose. It is personal—one-on-one time. I recall what ambassador Paul stated: I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all. 1 Corinthians 14:18 I often feel that speaking in English can interfere with my ability to pray. Praying in tongues has, over the years, become natural to me. But there are to distinct forms of tongues that are described in God’s Constitution. One is personal, the other is corporate. Ambassador Paul put it this way: For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you. You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious. But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them. A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.
I wish you could all speak in tongues, but even more I wish you could all prophesy. For prophecy is greater than speaking in tongues, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be strengthened.
Dear brothers and sisters, if I should come to you speaking in an unknown language, how would that help you? But if I bring you a revelation or some special knowledge or prophecy or teaching, that will be helpful. 1 Corinthians 14:2-6 NLT
Ambassador Paul taught the first century Kingdom citizens that had the ministry of spiritual gifts that they were, in contrast to personal spiritual gifts, for the building up of those in local gatherings of the citizens of the Kingdom—Individual versus corporate purpose. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12:7-11
Please note that tongues are an essential part of the Kingdom. It is the manifestation of the Governor’s presence in our lives. There is more to being filled with the Spirit than speaking in tongues, but tongues are an integral and vital part of the manifestation of the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives. Speaking in tongues is a flowing stream that should never dry up. We should speak the language of God’s Kingdom as its citizens.
Though some debate this, I will close with the reminder that when we speak in our Heavenly tongue, Satan cannot understand our native language. It is only by the Holy Spirit, whom Satan has no communication, that we speak in tongues. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:10-16
