What is Your Motive?
When our faith is challenged, it is always focused on whether we are going to obey the Word of the Lord God. Remember, your faith must have an object. Testing of our faith serves not only to show the strength of our faith in His Word, but also to reveal the motive behind our faith. If you say "I trust in the Lord God", then ask yourself, "why do I trust in Him"? Is it because of who He is or because of what you hope to get out of it? That is what Satan accused Job of. Satan's accusation was that Job only served Him because of the blessing that the Lord God bestowed upon him.
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them. And the Lord said to Satan, “From where do you come?”
So Satan answered the Lord and said, “From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.” Then the Lord said to Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, one who fears God and shuns evil?” So Satan answered the Lord and said, “Does Job fear God for nothing? Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land. But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” Satan wanted to reveal whether or not Job would continue to follow the Words of the Creator and Lord even after he lost everything.
Please note: In the Kingdom of God, as in any other country, your belief in the nation's constitutional promises and privileges can only be verified when circumstances require that you place a demand on the system. The testing of your faith in the Kingdom of God occurs through circumstances which provide an opportunity for you to validate your belief and faith in the King's Word (God's Constitution, the Bible--His principles and laws, such as the political, economic, social and cultural systems of Heaven on Earth).
My wife and I enjoy watching a TV program called "Joe Kenda: Homicide Hunter". It is a real life crime drama. Have you ever watched a detective story? The first thing they look for in a suspect is why? What was the motive? A motive is the hidden reason or desire that indicates, sustains and justifies an action. All human action, no matter what we claim to the contrary, is a product of a motive. A motive is internally justified reason. In fact, the absence of motive is a sign of death. Life itself depends on motivation to give it meaning. Where there is no motivation, there is no passion or energy. We all do everything for a reason.
So the next time your wife or husband gives you the answer, "I don't know why I did that", don't accept it. Tell them to think about it, before they give you an answer. There is always a motive, a reason. They just may not want to reveal the motive of their heart.
Job 1:6-11
