The Governor's Nature
People who are not yet in the Kingdom don't really understand the Holy Spirit's indispensable role in their lives. This is because they have been led to believe that He is mysterious and unknowable. Or they think He is a kind of apparition because of our modern connotations of the word "spirit". Also, the use of the term Holy Ghost for Holy Spirit in the King James version of God's Constitution give the wrong image of who the Holy Spirit is. Even individuals who have received the Governor have misconceptions regarding who He is.
I can tell you what He is not. He is not an "it" or a "thing". Some individuals refer to Him as a non-personal object. "Do you feel it?" or "Do you have it?" The Holy Spirit is a person with a personality.
The Holy Spirit is also not a kind of force or cosmic mind that we can "tap into". Many people think of the Holy Spirit as smoke or mist or a cloud that comes in to a place and sometimes causes people to fall down on the floor. That may happen sometimes, but that is just a reaction to His power. I also believe that individuals who are always looking for such manifestations are susceptible to imaginings and fabrications.
Jesus spoke about the Spirit using the term "He". In fact, this statement He made could not be any clearer:
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. John 16:13-14 Jesus could have stated "when the Holy Spirit comes..." but He kept repeating the word He, however, as if He wanted to make sure we knew the Holy Spirit is not just some force or cloud.
Just to reassure you, the Holy Spirit is also not just a "feeling". I think we have often relegated Him to a strange "goosebumps" experience. In years past, I was taught to believe that kind of wrong thinking, out of ignorance of the Word. Elijah knew the presence of the Lord and all the others were distractions. You do not need to make noise to experience the Holy Spirit. You certainly do not need loud drums and cowbells, screaming, shouting and clapping of hands. If you carefully and consistently read God's Constitution, most of the time when the Spirit manifested Himself, it was in quietness. No emotional button-pushing needed.
Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” I Kings 19:11-13
We need to learn God's Voice. That only comes through obedience to His Word.
