The Birth of the Kingdom--Dominion Authority
Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:26-28
Dominion is a governmental word, not a religious word. It is defined as: the power or right of governing and controlling; sovereign authority; having the power, authority, jurisdiction, control, command, sway, the right to govern or rule or determine.
Man was created to exercise his Kingdom authority and designed to manage it as he represented his Lord on earth. The motivating purpose for the creation of the human species was to have dominion over the earth and its resources, the result of the Creator's desires to extend His rulership from the supernatural realm to the physical realm. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your Kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Matthew 6:9-10 His plan and program was to do this through a family of spirit children He would call His sons. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26
Keep in mind, that this statement is the first declaration of God's intent for you and me. It encompasses the total purpose, assignment, potential, passion and design of man as an entity. This statement is the key to mankind's natural desires, sense of purpose and fulfillment in life. There are a number of critical principles embedded in the first mission statement of God concerning man's creation, that must be carefully examined:
”Let Us make man in Our image according to Our likeness; let them have dominion… male and female He created them.” “Us” and “Our” are plural, referring to God the Father, God the Word (Jesus) and the Holy Spirit. Our physical, mental and spiritual image was created in the image of the Trinity of God. We are to look, speak and act as a reflection of Him. Have you ever seen a child who looked, acted and sounded just like their parent? We say they are the “spitting image of their dad (or mom). Yes we are to be the image of our heavenly Father, whether a man or a woman. It is His spirit that reflects on our countenance. When people see you, do they see the Lord Jesus? What a compliment it would be for someone to say, "They sound just like Jesus!" when they hear you speak!
The Creator said let "them" have dominion over the earth. They were both equally mentioned—both male and female—when giving them authority and dominion over the earth.
"Let them have dominion." In verse 28, mankind—male and female—was given territory, an assignment and the authority to do it. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” NLT
Notice what they were not given dominion and authority over—mankind. In the Kingdom of God, we are to be self-governed by the guidance of the Holy Spirit (our Governor, living within us). When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own but will tell you what He has heard. He will tell you about the future. He will bring Me glory by telling you whatever He receives from Me. John 16:13-14 NLT For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:13-14
Then the Lord God gave them the responsibility of choosing. He did not create mindless robots, following His commands without any possibility of disobedience. The Lord God’s Kingdom citizens are always given the free will to be disobedient. He wants His citizens to choose Him freely and here was His first test for them: And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” Genesis 2:16-17
This is the Lord God’s heart for His people:
“Now listen! Today I am giving you a choice between life and death, between prosperity and disaster. For I command you this day to love the Lord your God and to keep His commands, decrees, and regulations by walking in His ways. If you do this, you will live and multiply, and the Lord your God will bless you and the land you are about to enter and occupy.
But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and if you are drawn away to serve and worship other gods, then I warn you now that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live a long, good life in the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy.
Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying Him, and committing yourself firmly to Him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 30:15-20 NLT
These principles are key to understanding God’s Kingdom and your Kingdom dominion, authority and responsibility.
