To understand the Lord God's intent, one must return to the beginning. Remember, before any religion, there was the Word and His Word was law. In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through Him. Governments and their constitutions may come and go, but His Word remains the same. Many religions regard His Constitution as a religious book, but in reality, it is a legal document. A book of laws that please the King of the heavens and earth.
Keep in mind, there was one command, one law...our Creator's. It was the spoken Word and Adam failed to embrace it as sacred. Whenever the King gave a request, it became a decree. Adam only knew the spoken Word. The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” Food for thought: there was no other knowledge but the knowledge of the Lord God. This was before Adam ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Do you remember the nation of Israel, whom the Lord God chose through the faith of His servant Abram, better known to many as Abraham? In order for them to know the desire of their King and God, He had to make known to them His decrees, principles and laws through a representative known as Moses. These are the regulations you must present to Israel. Here are just a few of the laws He gave His chosen people, through the promise He made through Abraham. You must not pass along false rumors. You must not cooperate with evil people by lying on the witness stand.
You must not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you are called to testify in a dispute, do not be swayed by the crowd to twist justice. And do not slant your testimony in favor of a person just because that person is poor.
If you come upon your enemy’s ox or donkey that has strayed away, take it back to its owner. If you see that the donkey of someone who hates you has collapsed under its load, do not walk by. Instead, stop and help.
In a lawsuit, you must not deny justice to the poor.
Be sure never to charge anyone falsely with evil. Never sentence an innocent or blameless person to death, for I never declare a guilty person to be innocent.
Take no bribes, for a bribe makes you ignore something that you clearly see. A bribe makes even a righteous person twist the truth.
You must not oppress foreigners. You know what it’s like to be a foreigner, for you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.
Keep in mind, these laws and principles represent the Lord God's character and His character has never changed and neither will it. You can never say "God changed His mind". Here is what King Jesus, His Son, stated while He was here on earth: Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved. That is for those of you who think the Old Testament isn't important. Remember, testament is a legal term, not a religious term.
Religious people are full of tradition and customs. They view the Lord God's Constitution as religious writings. but those who have embraced the Kingdom concept, view the Lord God's Constitution for what it really is. Keep in mind, the Lord God's character never changes. His Word is who He is. If you truly want to be in good standing, you must obey His laws. (Thank the Lord Jesus who gave us the Holy Spirit to help us to do that!) He made that very clear when He spoke to His servant Moses. Read Leviticus 18 God still hates disobedience (sin) to His Word. Our world may change, but His character never changes.
Now, concerning the Sabbath, the Lord Jesus made it very clear that He is the Lord of the Sabbath and that it was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. At about that time Jesus was walking through some grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry, so they began breaking off some heads of grain and eating them. But some Pharisees saw them do it and protested, “Look, your disciples are breaking the law by harvesting grain on the Sabbath.”
Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you read in the Scriptures what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He went into the house of God, and he and his companions broke the law by eating the sacred loaves of bread that only the priests are allowed to eat. And haven’t you read in the law of Moses that the priests on duty in the Temple may work on the Sabbath? I tell you, there is one here who is even greater than the Temple! But you would not have condemned my innocent disciples if you knew the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”
The purpose for the Sabbath was literally for rest, yet today Sunday is often the most exhausting day of the week for believers. It is the religious traditions of man that exhaust them, not the demands of God. So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day God had finished His work of creation, so He rested from all His work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when He rested from all his work of creation. Why did God rest? Was He tired? Did He need to put His feet up and have a cold drink? Did He need a nap? NO. He was modeling what He wanted for us...a day of rest.
Approach God's Constitution as an unchanging legal document, where our loving Father God tells us what He wants for us, in us and done through us. His laws, decrees and principles are all for our good. All our focus in His Constitution should be our obedience to His Word.
