Your life is the sum total of all the decisions you make every day. Those decisions are determined by your priorities. It took some time for me to understand this!
Keep in mind, the Lord God has His priority and being that He is King, our priorities should be the same as His. Our priority should reflect His. It has been said, “The greatest tragedy in life is not death but life lived without a purpose”. If that holds true, then life with the wrong priorities is tragic.
I must say that one of the greatest mistakes in this life is to be busy but not effective or productive. We should know the assignment that the Lord God has for us. If we do not know our purpose or assignment, we will be unsuccessful in all we do for the King. Why? Because we will be working in our human strength and not guided by the Holy Spirit—our Governor in the Kingdom. I cry out to God Most High, to God who will fulfill His purpose for me. Psalm 57:2 NLT You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail. Proverbs 19:21 NLT
King Jesus made it perfectly clear—Seek first the Kingdom and His righteousness—those are His declared priorities for us. As citizens of the Kingdom, “things” should never be our priority. That puts things out of order. We should be seeking to be in right standing in His Kingdom. That is what is meant by righteousness, obeying His laws and principles. Our actions and behavior must reflect our Lord and King. We can’t live with one foot in the world and one in God’s Kingdom. We can’t seek after the things of this world and be in right standing in His Kingdom. Do not be deceived. Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7-8
Also note, that King Jesus never instructed us to seek Him. He always points us to His Kingdom and Father. From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Matthew 4:17 Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” John 5:19 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. John 6:38
Remember, failure to establish the correct priority causes you to waste valuable time! It causes you to waste your two most important commodities: your time and your energy. You can always get more money, but your time and your energy are limited! This is why it is so important to be guided by our Governor—the Holy Spirit. When you are not led by the Holy Spirit, you will find yourself with wrong priorities. When your priorities aren’t the Lord God’s priorities, you will find yourself busy with the wrong things. You will be majoring in the minor, doing the unnecessary without the assistance of the Holy Spirit. You will become preoccupied with unimportant things. This is why being led by the Holy Spirit through every step is vital to the citizens of the Lord God’s Kingdom. Remember what King Jesus said to His disciples: “If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.” John 14:15-17
For a moment, let us turn our attention to your thought life. If you want a true assessment of your priorities, examine your thought life. What fills your mind is your priority. Change your thoughts, change your priorities. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 2 Colossians 3:2
Even as I am writing this article to you and many others around the world, I am feeling the leading of the Holy Spirit and submitting to Him governing my life.
If your life feels chaotic, out of order and things “never work out”, evaluate your priorities. If you feel He doesn’t answer your prayers or has gone silent, evaluate your priorities. It is your priorities that are out of order, not His Kingdom. Reprioritize your life, aligning it with the Father’s priorities: Seek His Kingdom and His righteousness.
Everything else is a very distant third place.
Remember, your faith in the King’s Word is your most valuable asset in His Kingdom.
