Meeting your responsibilities in your own strength does not give rest, even if you love what you are doing. When you are preoccupied with doing your ministry obligations in your own strength, you aren’t seeking the Father or His Kingdom, which is always to be our first priority and responsibility above all. But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33 Often people gauge how “anointed” the service was by how tired they are when they get home! They have to rest up before going to work on Monday. That is the very opposite of the finding rest in His presence. This high energy, entertainment is not what is meant by “do not forsake the assembling of ourselves together” in Hebrews 10. Its purpose was to encourage one another in the Kingdom. We are to gain all the knowledge we can concerning God’s Kingdom. My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. Hosea 4:6
So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest. But if we disobey God, as the people of Israel did, we will fall. Hebrews 4:9-11
King Jesus showed us the best example, through Martha and Mary, of finding rest and peace in His presence, rather than by doing things for Him. They came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what He taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42 NLT Mary received His rest and peace, while Martha worked hard but received neither rest nor peace.
While I resided in Brooklyn, New York, I attended many churches that held services Friday nights and all day Sunday and Sunday evening, thinking that was the will of the Lord God. It was as if your level of exhaustion equaled your righteousness! The next morning, I would have great difficulty getting out of bed to go to my job—I had two full time jobs at that time. Rest and peace was definitely lacking in my life at that time. Every since I have come into the knowledge of His Kingdom, I have found peace and rest. I enjoy my purpose and assignment in His Kingdom. My obligations are only to the Father, not man.
How then do we receive His rest and peace in our busy life? Stay in His presence and praise Him continually! I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. Psalm 34:1 I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High. Psalm 7:17
We as Kingdom citizens should always represent the King in all that we say and do. In other words, it should be our lifestyle. Just as I am an example, you should be as well. King David truly appreciated the work of the King’s hands and worshipped Him for it, as we should as well.
O Lord, our Lord, Your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength, silencing Your enemies and all who oppose You. When I look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers—the moon and the stars You set in place—what are mere mortals that You should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet You made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority—the flocks and the herds and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, and everything that swims the ocean currents. O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Psalm 8:1-9 NLT
The Lord God’s Presence attracts the right people into your life. Once you are at peace with what is happening in your life, you can trust the Lord God to bring the right people and the right opportunities your way. In fact, what many consider miracles are standard procedure in His Kingdom. But if I am casting out demons by the power of God, then the Kingdom of God has arrived among you. Luke 11:20
You will find good things will happen more abundantly when you stop trying to do everything in your own strength. Don’t strive, but rest in His presence. People are attracted to us because they are attracted by the Lord God’s Holy Spirit. You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalm 16:11 Moses knew being in the Lord God’s Presence was vital. And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
Then he said to Him, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here. For how then will it be known that Your people and I have found grace in Your sight, except You go with us? So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.” Exodus 33:14-16
Your life should be distinguished because the Lord God hangs out with you, not for what you have or what you do. When the Lord God resides with you, people are drawn to you even though they don’t know why. They are drawn like a moth to a flame. I experience this regularly. At first I thought it was my attire, but I later realized it was His presence residing in me. As King Jesus said, He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”
Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My Word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. He who does not love Me does not keep My Words; and the Word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me. John 14:21-24
When His presence is in you, people know something is different with you, even if they can’t figure it out. In truth, they are being drawn by the Holy Spirit to the Lord, not to you. His presence in you is what makes the difference.
So then, I encourage you that in all your “doing” to stop and ask yourself when you last sat at His feet and basked in His Presence. Ask yourself when you last felt His gift of rest and peace. And ask yourself honestly whether you have been more like Martha or Mary. Both are necessary, but being in His presence is the greater one.
Remember, your faith in His Word is your greatest asset in the Kingdom.
