Kingdom Humility
Recently when I asked the Lord what I should write, the Holy Spirit spoke one word—humility. When was the last time you heard anyone preach on humility? I think people equate being humble with being weak and that is an error. When I read the four Gospels, King Jesus is humble but never in any way weak.
We often group humility and meekness together. But being humble or meek does not mean that people may control or manipulate you. You can know your own mind and be unshakeable in your believe in the Lord Jesus and still be kind and gentle with others, having a servant’s heart and loving even those who may hate or mistreat you. That takes strength and self-control. We are to humbly submit our will to His Will and His Word. That is true humility. To accurately represent the Lord Jesus, we must be genuinely humble. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. Ephesians 4:2-3 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give His life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
Humility is the very opposite of pride and arrogance, which the Lord God hates. These six things the Lord hates; Indeed, seven are repulsive to Him: A proud look [the attitude that makes one overestimate oneself and discount others], a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood. A heart that creates wicked plans, feet that run swiftly to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies [even half-truths], and one who spreads discord (rumors) among brothers. Proverbs 6:16-19 AMP None of these things would ever be equated with humility!
We live in a time when the world is filled with self promotion and a “what’s in it for me” attitude. Sometimes people get their self-esteem by making others look incompetent and foolish. But trust in the Lord God to be your advocate in those times. Humbly submit to His will and His wisdom. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that! 2 Timothy 3:2-5
But we, as citizens of the Kingdom, are counter-culture. We respond to the evil of the world, according to God’s Word, with grace, humility, kindness and strength in knowing our King will always take care of us and His Will shall be done in every situation we face. We know that in every situation, He is working it for our ultimate good. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. Romans 8:27-28
We, as citizens of the Kingdom, are the antidote for the evil that brings much pain and misery to this fallen world. They don’t need our anger, frustration and bitterness. There is more than enough of that to go around. The people in our community need to see Kingdom humility—Believers who are humble, kind, at peace, and filled with grace and mercy for all, yet strong and unwavering with their faith in our King Jesus. Yes we are His “holy people”! Since God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. Colossians 3:12-15
I am overwhelmed with all the scriptures the Holy Spirit brings to mind as I try to adequately write about humility. My words pale in the presence of the Lord God’s Word, so I will close with this final Word: In the same way, you who are younger must accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, dress yourselves in humility as you relate to one another, for:
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time He will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for He cares about you. Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. 1 Peter 5:5-9a
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake,
For theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you,
And say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake." Matthew 5:3-11 NKJV
