Kingdom 103: Never Assume in Marriage Pt 2
Let's continue with the Kingdom perspective on marriage. In verse 25 of Ephesians 5, the Constitution states: Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her This is a reference to His death on that accursed cross. The Lord Jesus informed His followers of this. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. The Lord Jesus' death on the cross for us was the greatest expression of love in history. Keep in mind, Jesus never assumed that the example of His death alone would be enough to keep us assured of His love for all time. He knew that we needed daily reassurance. This is one reason why, after His resurrection, He sent the Holy Spirit to dwell with us and in us and in all who believe in Him.
As stated in the Constitution by the Lord Jesus in the book of John, the Holy Spirit was referred to as "Counselor" or "Comforter". And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you...But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. In some translations it states "Helper". In any case, He is the one that will assist us until King Jesus' return. “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. It is to our benefit and advantage that the Helper comes. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
Now allow me to share this piece of information with you. The Greek word is parakletos which literally means "one who is called alongside". It is a very important role of the Comforter. He is to comfort or reassure us, on a daily basis, of Christ's love for us. This is what the ambassador Paul referred to when he wrote: Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For those of you who obey His Word, the Holy Spirit resides permanently in your hearts and lives as a continual reminder of the love of the Lord God. Jesus gives us constant reassurance of His love; He never assumes that we know it. From time to time I take a moment to text Arlene to assure her that I love and appreciate all that she does. I never assume she knows it.
Suppose a husband purchased a beautiful new vehicle for his wife as an expression of his love for her. By no means is that the same as speaking to her and reassuring her of your love for her. Remember, love is a verb, not a noun; it requires action!
