Kingdom 101: What is Dominion?

What does it mean to "have dominion"? Dominion is having absolute authority over a territory and its people. Along with that authority is responsibility for that territory and the people on it. You rule when you have dominion. Domination or "to dominate" is sometimes used interchangeably but they are not the same. Domination infers forcing control over another. It is forcing control upon others, rather than being given authority over a region and its citizens. We are not to dominate, but to been given authority.
I believe that definition should be understood, committed to memory, as well as embraced by the spirit of every individual if we are to understand the original purpose and will of God our Creator for our existence. Remember, man was created with a dominion mandate over the earth, giving him responsibility for representing the Kingdom government of God on this earth. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Genesis 1:26-28
Mankind is heaven's earthly agency for Kingdom influence. Humans are intended to embody the nature of God on earth and serve as His divine ambassador in the physical world. The ambassador Paul made it very clear: Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? I Corinthians 3:16 We carry the Holy Spirit with us everywhere we go. We should always remember that! This creation and commissioning of man was the first introduction and establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven on this earth.
This proclamation by our Source and Creator for man to have dominion over the earth was given to the entire human race, both male and female. This is a fundamental precept as it renders all mankind "rulers" or kings in this earth. In fact, at no time in this mandate did the Lord God ever plan or intend for mankind to rule over another man; but to exercise their royal sovereignty as a corporate kingship, responsible to the Lord to govern, rule and manage the earth and its resources. Keep this in its right perspective. This was the Lord God's original intent before man was disobedient.
Please note: Jesus is designated "King of kings" in the culmination of His redemptive work. This concept is echoed in the word of God to the entire nation of Israel through Moses while releasing the Israelites from the oppression of Egypt under the rule of Pharaoh. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine. And you shall be to Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” Exodus 19:5-6
Yes, dominion is having authority and power, but more than that, it comes with great responsibility. We are responsible for the care we give to what God has given us dominion over. That is stewardship. We answer to our Lord and King for how we handle that responsibility: And the Lord said, “Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his master will make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of food in due season? Blessed is that servant whom his master will find so doing when he comes.
Truly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all that he has. But if that servant says in his heart, ‘My master is delaying his coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and be drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the unbelievers. And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more. Luke 12:42-48
You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one another. John 15:16-17
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”
And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Luke 10:17-19
Remember, your greatest asset is your faith in the King’s Word.
