God Created Marriage as a Foundational Institution
There is another important truth about the institution of marriage. God established it as the first and most fundamental element of human society. While the family is the basic foundation of any healthy society, marriage is the foundation of the family. Marriage is a foundational institution that predates all other institutions. Before there were nations and governments-- before there were churches, schools or businesses-- there was the family; and before the family there was marriage.
Focus Point: While the family is the basic foundation of any healthy society, marriage is the foundation of the family.
Focus Point: Keep in mind, that marriage is foundational because it is on this relationship that God began to build society. Remember, God brought Adam and Eve together in the garden. Marriage was the framework for the development of their social interaction as they grew together.
Focus Point: it was in the context of marriage that they learned their responsibilities toward each other and lived out their commitments to each other.
Look around you, read what is in the newspaper, television and the internet. What is the world's thinking? Human society in all forms depends on marriage for its survival. This is why the current low regard for marriage in the minds of so many is so dangerous. With all traditional values and foundations being assaulted on every side, and on every turn, is it any surprise that marriage is under attack as well? I truly believe that soon the chickens will come home to roost.
Focus Point: The adversary knows that if he can destroy the institution of marriage, he can destroy the family; if he can destroy the family, he can destroy society; and if he can destroy society, he can destroy humanity as we now know it to be.
Focus Point: Marriage is also the foundation upon which the church, the community of believers and the Creator's special society rests. The Constitution in the New Testament describes the relationship between Christ and His Church as being like that of a bridegroom to His bride. This analogy has significant implications for understanding how husbands and wives are to relate to each other while on this planet called earth.
Example: Paul stated to the citizens at Ephesus:
Constitutional Scriptures:
Ephesians 5:21-23 submitting to one another in the fear of God. 22) Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23) For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body.
Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her
Ephesians 5:31-32 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32) This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Please note: The relationship between Christ and His Church is a model for that which should exist between husband and wife: a relationship of respect and the mutual submission and sacrificial love.
Focus Point: Keep in mind: a healthy "house" is the key to both a healthy church and a healthy society.
