A Kingdom of Kings
Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” Note that in this verse it doesn't state anything about ruling another human being. It was not the Lord God's original design that any man would rule over another human being. God created all of us to rule, not to be ruled. In accordance with His own plan, He needed someone to dominate a piece of real estate called earth, so He created man. He made us to be in charge of this unique territory to rule over the earth domain. Many of us have either lost sight of this truth or never learned it in the first place. Understanding that we were created for dominion carries truly some life changing ramifications.
The Lord's purpose has never changed. He remains committed to His plan for man to dominate planet earth, even if He has to create a new earth. Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Trapped inside everyone of us is a dominion spirit, crying for release and a dominion mandate, waiting to be exercised. It is this natural spirit of dominion that causes us to naturally rebel against any attempt to dominate or control our lives or destiny. Because of that we rebel or go crazy whenever we are under someone else's domination; whether the oppression comes from religion or the world systems. Human beings were not meant to live a life of subjugation and will always resist oppression.
Food for thought:
1. If God created all of us to rule, and not to be ruled, how do you explain systems of government where there are rulers and citizens? How do courts and judges fit into this system?
2. Why do you think many human beings lost sight of the fact that God charged us to dominate the earth? What might have happened if we had kept this within our sight.
3. Why does man "naturally rebel against any attempt to dominate or control" their lives? What factors are at work in this rebellion? Is this rebellion intrinsically good or evil? Take a minute to explain your answer.
Remember, at creation, the Lord God gave man dominion over the entire physical realm, making him the defacto king of the earth. To dominate means to govern, rule, control, manage, lead or have authority over something. There is a distinction here: God gave rulership of planet earth, not ownership. Someone who gives up ownership to another person also surrenders all responsibility for it. But the individual who assigns the position of rulership of a place, but retains ownership, will retain the ultimate responsibility. Based on these concepts, what is God's responsibility to planet earth? What is your personal responsibility?
