We stay in abusive or toxic relationships because the risk of being alone seems worse. We don't consider that we could be in a happy healthy relationship in the future or that being alone doesn't necessarily mean lonely. We put up with our loved ones disrespecting us and treating us badly because we fear losing their love. It all boils down to fear and rejection.
We stay in sub-standard, low paying jobs rather than risking rejection or investing the time and effort to find a better job. A low-paying dead end job is better than none, right? It's easier to accept the status quo rather than invest in a better education.
In general, the older we get, the less we are willing to risk--the more we are willing to "put up with". It may not be a great life, but as least we know what to expect--so we live a substandard life, content to know what to expect.... because we hate change! Can you relate?
Do you dare to allow yourself to dream of something better? Sometimes we need to change. Sometimes we need to say we deserve better! Sometimes we need to confront and draw a line in the sand.
I speak from what I have lived. For over 30 years I was married to a man who cheated. He wasn't a bad man, but it was a bad marriage. But I had relative security, a home and children. I "went along". I settled rather than confront my life and risk everything in the hopes of a better life. When I finally let go of that life, I lost all the material things and the financial security I had. I lost all our friends. I lost everything EXCEPT my sons and my self-respect. I felt a freedom I had never known. Now, in just a few years time, I have a husband--a man of God--who loves me dearly. We have built a life together. I am happy and blessed. Life never gets perfect, but it sure can get better.
I still have some things I need to confront, risk losing and pray for the "better" I deserve. What are you putting up with that you need to confront?
God loves you and wants to give you the desires of your heart. But as long as you hold on to "good enough for me" He will not give it to you.
Stop settling!
Psalm 37:4-5:
Delight yourself also in the Lord,
And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
5) Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.
